Diya Jolly, Google's VP of product management, told Ars Technicathere was no particular reason for the change. "We just felt we could bring the experience to bear with Cast, and the experiences are the same. We would have easily given the third parties Cast if they wanted it, but I think most developers are comfortable using Android Things." The Nest Hub can be quite helpful in the kitchen, but the Nest Audio isn’t much more expensive and offers way better sound and would make more sense if it’s being used both in the kitchen and the living room. Whether you have light or dark decor, either speaker line will have something complementary. The Echo and Echo Dot are both available in black, blue, or white versions; the Nest Audio comes in black, blue, green, salmon, or white, while the Nest Mini has black, blue, salmon, and white models. Google Assistant doesn't have nearly as many third-party plug-ins, but it's much easier to talk to. It can understand different requests more easily than Alexa, and that's very appealing. Keep in mind that, with both Alexa and Google Assistant, third-party speaker manufacturers are increasingly choosing to integrate the voice helpers into their own products.

If you forget the name of a device, you can check it with a couple of taps. You can watch YouTube on the Echo Show, but only via a browser, which doesn't respond to voice commands. At any rate, the result is messier than Google probably wanted or intended.
If you want to disable the camera while leaving the microphone on, you'll need to swipe up on the touchscreen and tap a hotkey in the settings bar. You can view the Nest Hub Max's camera feed on your phone from Google's Home and Nest apps, the latter of which also lets you set custom motion activation zones. It doesn't feature night vision, but it supports two-way talk and can alert you if it sees movement.

You can also multitask while you cook and watch videos, play music, set a timer or add something to your shopping list. Simply say "resume cooking" when you're ready and Google will go right back to where you left off in the recipe. It's a great feature that's ahead of Alexa's similar recipe feature on the Echo Show. If you don't like the sound quality of the Nest Hub, you can also set another speaker as your default and it will automatically start playing music on that device instead of through its own speakers. Have recommendable 10-inch smart displays with Google Assistant built in and most of the same features as the Nest Hub.
Leaving it out makes it a more jarring jump from a device that didn't include a camera at all to one where a face-tracking camera is the central feature -- particularly one that can't simply be covered up when it's not in use. A shutter would have offered some additional peace of mind for anyone planning to use a device like this somewhere like a bedroom. We turned the ambient EQ lighting feature off on the original so you can see the difference it makes. Using YouTube is a breeze, but other supported services are a pain. Google Nest Hub review: Google's Nest Hub smart display is still great
Recently Google launched a follow up to its smallest smart speaker; the Google Nest Mini comes with three speakers (that's one more than the original), and is made from recycled materials. With Google Assistant, your Google Home can control your Philips Hue lightbulbs, Honeywell thermostat, Nest security camera, and smart TV (as long as it's compatible). The display gives the impression it's floating on top of the speaker section, which is a forward-firing full range driver, as well as a pair of mics for picking up your voice commands. Elsewhere, the Nest Hub Max boosts the experience of the smaller display device, expanding to 10-inches and offering stereo speakers backed with a woofer for better sound delivery. That's one option or just pay the extra for a Hub Max, the sound quality on that is very good. The other smart displays we've tested can also automatically adjust their brightness based on ambient light to an extent, but the Nest Hub is much better at it as it also makes adjustments based on color temperature. All Google Assistant smart displays make similar use of the touchscreen. AirPlay allows wireless connection of Apple devices with external screens or speakers.
Thanks to its diminutive size, the Nest Mini can be placed virtually anywhere, including wall-mounted, and even kept out of sight if you wish. It can load up content on any Chromecast device, giving you voice-controlled access to movies and TV shows from supported services. Google Nest Hub offers a 7-inch display, sleep tracking, all the features of Google Assistant. The sound on the Nest Hub is a lot clearer but is also a lot more tinny than the sound of the Google Home.
Rather than 360-degree sound, the sound is now directional, but with a good size of speaker driver and a tweeter in this compact unit, the sound quality is really good for the price. If you want an audio quality upgrade from the original Google Home and don't need the screen, go for the new Nest Audio. "At night, I just say, 'Hey Google, turn off my bedroom lights,' and the room goes dark," she wrote. If you're going for pure sonic superiority between the Echo and Google Home ranges however, opt for the Google Home Max.
The Ambient EQ feature is undoubtedly why videos look so good on such a small screen, but it's at its best when the Nest Hub has a picture on display. If you wish the Nest Hub was bigger, louder and had a camera, this is the Google Assistant for you. Otherwise, the regular-sized version and other, smaller smart displays are closer to the sweet spot. The discontinued Google Home Max was easily the loudest first-party smart speaker out there, but it's no longer available. Now, the Echo Studio is by far the strongest in terms of sound quality, with powerful audio and the ability to fill a room with directional sound thanks to its angled drivers. Alexa and Google Assistant are two of the leading voice assistants out there.
Face Match was quick to set up, and the wide-angle lens did a good job of recognizing me whenever I approached the device, or even if I was standing off to the side of it. When it's activated, you'll see your own user icon in the top right corner of the home screen that lets you know that the device recognizes you. If you tap the screen to see your list of recommended actions, it'll read "Just for you," and show personalized cards for video messages, calendar appointments and more. When different devices are connected to the same network, data can be transferred easily between them. More microphones result in better sound quality and enable the device to filter out background noise. Nest Audio refreshes Google's original speaker, boosting eco credentials with more recycled material, while bringing in a fresh new design too.
