For one sequence, the movie becomes a cat-and-mouse cartoon and a lampoon of home-invasion thrillers. In Polish, the movie is called Kevin sam w domu (meaning "Kevin home alone"). In Poland the film "Home Alone" became a phenomenon and part of the Christmas tradition. Julio Macat, the films cinematographer, considers Home Alone his favorite film out of all the projects he has shot. Naomi Barnwell of Roobla said that "Home Alone has all the ingredients that make for a great kids’ film". On September 15, 2020, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment and 20th Century Studios Home Entertainment released Home Alone on Ultra HD Blu-ray in time for its 30th anniversary in the United States.
A sixth film was released digitally on Disney+ on November 12, 2021, titled Home Sweet Home Alone. Devin Ratray, who played Buzz McCallister in the first two films, reprised his role in the film. It was praised for its quotable phrases, morals, traps, and main character.

For the television version, about twenty minutes of this movie was edited in very small sections, because this movie is exactly two hours long. In order to watch the full version on television, the time slot is extended to two and a half hours. The score of the film was composed and conducted by John Debney, which incorporates John Williams's themes from the first two films. Two tracks in the score, "He's Hurting Me", and "Who Raised This Monster?", included a reference to Alan Silvestri's theme from the film, Mouse Hunt.

As Max and Carol return home, the whole family is preparing to leave for Tokyo, Japan, for the holidays, with Carol leaving earlier than the rest. Max, annoyed with the fuss, settles in the garage-parked car to watch cartoons and accidentally falls asleep without knowing it. Unfortunately, Max's family didn't realize that their son was sleeping in the car parked in the garage and left him at home, thinking he was in another vehicle with one of the rest of the members. The sixth film in the Home Alone franchise, Home Sweet Home Alone was produced by 20th Century Studios as an original title for Disney+, the first 20th Century Studios film to be produced for the streaming service. The film was announced after The Walt Disney Company acquired 21st Century Fox and inherited the rights to the Home Alone franchise. The film centers on a boy who is left behind at the time when a married couple plan to get inside thinking he took a malformed doll that belonged to them.

" Hughes wrote eight pages of notes that developed into the screenplay. Imagining that children are naturally most scared of robbers, Hughes also worked that aspect into the plot of the film.
The couple spot Max talking with someone and assume she is his grandmother. They resolve to break into the house once again while their family is still at church. Meanwhile, Max discovers the whole family has left and initially has fun, though he quickly grows bored and misses them. Meanwhile, Jeff and Pam arrive at the Mercer's and get inside. Overhearing them talk about getting an "ugly little boy", Max assumes they are talking about kidnapping and selling him.

That should probably make her a lot more nervous than it did. The very inappropriate way she described her relationship with Helena was kind of exciting in a way. She hadn’t known what to expect from the piano teacher but was a little surprised when she liked the woman.

The film is listed in the Guinness World Records as the highest-grossing live-action comedy ever and held the record until it was overtaken by The Hangover Part II in 2011. Senta Moses, who played Tracy, recalled in 2020 that one of the most difficult scenes to shoot was the family's run through O'Hare International Airport to catch their flight.

Due to the sales, the film did not perform as well in the rental market. Meanwhile, on Christmas Eve, Harry and Marv finally realize that only Kevin is in the McCallister home, and Kevin overhears them discussing plans to break into the house that night.
